8 Signs That You Aced Your Interview

There are few feelings on earth as great as the feeling of an interview gone well. Being prepared, answering every question intelligently, and receiving great feedback can make anyone feel invincible.

But how sure are you, really? Did you actually ace that interview? Or are the interviewers shaking their heads the second you walk out the door? Crushing an interview feels great, but before you run out to pour Gatorade over your head, run through these points to see if you really did as well as you think.

    1. The interviewer tried to sell the job

If you caught your interviewer trying to sell the position to you rather than you marketing yourself to them, it’s a good sign you made an impression. By trying to get you on board, they’ve established that you’re valuable and are (at the very least) a frontrunner on their shortlist.

    2. The interview turns conversational

This one can be tricky depending on how sociable the recruiter is, but generally speaking, a relaxed and conversational interview is a good sign. Recruiters look for candidates who have good people skills and who can roll with the punches, so to speak. While a laid-back tone isn’t any type of guarantee, a relaxed interview indicates that the hiring executive enjoyed his/her time and sees you as a personable candidate.

    3. The interview ran long

Most hiring managers decide within the first few minutes of meeting a candidate whether he/she will be a good fit. If your interview ran longer than it was scheduled to, or if the interviewer makes an offer to continue discussions further, it’s a good indicator that you’re worth the time.

    4. Their language gives them away

Some hiring managers give their thoughts away with the words they choose. Saying “you are a good fit” instead of “you would be a good fit”, for example, indicates that their vision of you at the company goes beyond the hypothetical. These linguistic giveaways can be strong indicators that you’ve made a good impression.

    5. The interviewer discussed specific, next steps

Naturally, interviewers who discuss the next steps of the hiring process with you are giving you a green flag. If they give you an exact starting date or concrete directions about how to proceed down the pipeline, congratulations—you aced your interview.

    6. You were given a tour and met some employees

If you were given a tour, then great! That’s a good sign. If you happened to be introduced to several other employees along the way, even better. While a guided tour isn’t a dead giveaway of an upcoming job offer, no hiring executives will bother showing a prospect around the office if they aren’t trying to see how the candidate fits into the environment.

    8. They began compensation negotiations

Few recruiters are open about salary, benefits, and other forms of compensation to candidates who don’t show potential. If the recruiter discusses salary with you, you can take it as a sign that a firm offer may be on its way.

Don’t Give Up, Even If You Fail

If you ran through this list post-interview and couldn’t check off as many boxes as you’d like, don’t worry—research indicates that most candidates go through at least three interviews before getting hired. If you haven’t yet begun winning recruiters over, learn what you can from your failure and keep moving forward.
